New research from Butterfly Conservation in the UK reveals that allowing parts of your garden to grow wild with long grass can increase butterfly numbers by up to 93% and attract a wider range of species.

The study, published in the journal Science of the Total Environment, shows that gardens with long grass had significantly higher butterfly abundance and diversity.

The benefits of wild spaces were most pronounced in urban and intensively farmed areas, with gardens in these locations seeing the greatest increase in butterfly populations.

Butterfly Conservation is urging people to create their own Wild Space to help butterflies thrive and reverse their decline.
