It’s been a tradition for patrons of the Forbidden Island Tiki lounge Alameda, and it goes back to World War II. Customers pin dollar bills to the ceiling of the bar, and it became a part of the bar’s décor. Recently they ran out of space, so owner Michael Thanos and his staff began taking the money down. It took them five hours, and when they finished they tallied over ten thousand dollars in cash! They’ll donate the money to several East Bay Charities. The donation will be divided up and split between Building Futures, Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter and Alameda Family Services.
