One of our favorite Bay Area institutions is closing.

After nearly 100 years in business on Fisherman’s Wharf Alioto’s is closing its doors permanently. It was founded in 1925 by Italian immigrant Nunzio Alioto as a simple fish stand on the Wharf. Later it moved to stall number 8, which is why you can still see the number 8 on the front of the building.

In the 1930s Alioto opened a seafood bar, and began selling crab cocktails & fresh Dungeness crab.

His family continued the tradition after his death in 1933, and in 1938 they established the full restaurant.

Alioto’s initially closed its doors in March of 2020 because of the pandemic.
