A pilot shortage will contribute to increased travel costs this summer.

U.S airlines have never been more desperate for experienced pilots. American Airlines alone expects to lose more than 5,000 of its 15,000 pilots to retire over the next seven years. American says they’re hiring between 50 and 70 pilots each week. United plans to hire at least 2000 pilots this year.

The pilot job market is so hot that some airlines are offering future pilots jobs even before they finish flight school. The job will be waiting for them when they finish their training. Senior pilots can earn about $450,000 a year.

The pilot shortage is causing many airlines to cancel flights, and this raises the ticket price for existing flights.
