Today's An Important Day In The Sierra

Today’s a big day in the Sierra. Water officials will hike up to Echo Summit to take the annual snowpack measurement. So far the snowpack is 236% of normal. One more percentage point would tie the record that has stood since 1952.

That record is within reach because the higher elevations could see at least 10 more inches of snow before the season ends. The hope is that temperatures there remain on the cooler side over the next few months. If the air heats up too quickly the snow would melt too fast, filling up the reservoirs beyond their capacity, forcing officials to release the valuable runoff.

Melted snow accounts for about a third of California’s water supply.
