Great-Grandmother Of 13 Wins Big From Scratch-Off Ticket

  • Monday was a busy day at the North Carolina Education Lottery headquarters, where two different people showed up to claim $250,000 jackpots they won from scratch-off tickets over the weekend.
  • After an Ocean Isle Beach man stopped by to collect his prize, West End resident Rosa Yearby – a grandmother of 13 – appeared to pick up her winnings, lottery officials say. Minus state and federal tax withholdings, Yearby walked away with $178,126, according to a press release issued on Tuesday.
  • What’s more is Yearby won the loot by playing a $5 scratch-off ticket, which she bought at Nic’s Pic Kwik in Pinebluff, she says. “I was so excited; I was just trembling,” Yearby says. “I really was. I almost couldn’t think of my kids’ [phone] numbers. My son said, ‘You need to get that ticket home.’”
