First Black Astronaut Candidate Finally Goes To Space

  • Ed Dwight could have been the first Black man in space - instead, he had to wait more than 60 years to make the trip.
  • The 90-year-old former Air Force pilot was one of five passengers who flew to the edge of space on Sunday in a capsule made by Blue Origin, the rocket company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
  • In 1963, Dwight was the first Black man ever nominated to be a NASA astronaut. But he wasn't chosen, despite backing from President John F. Kennedy himself.
  • Now, Dwight holds a different record - the oldest person to fly to space, breaking the record set by Star Trek actor William Shatner in 2021.
  • How much would you pay to go to outer space?
