AOL, formerly known as America Online, is shutting down its dial-up internet service, sparking shock and nostalgia among internet users. Dial-up internet, which required a physical phone line and assigned a new IP address with each connection, originated in university labs before going commercial in the US. The service will officially end on September 30, 2025, as maintaining the infrastructure for an outdated technology became burdensome for AOL. Despite its security advantages, dial-up's slow speeds and outdated technology have made it obsolete in the age of broadband and satellite internet connectivity.
