Mary Jane Gacono has had dementia for almost ten years now. Luckily, Mary Jane is married to a really, really nice man.
Carl is her husband and they have been married for 68 years.
Recently, Carl had a doctors appointment and asked their daughter Becky to come to the house and stay with Mary Jane for a few hours while he was gone. It was then that she got a look at the loving, detailed morning routine that her mom and dad have every single morning as Mary Jane battles with dementia.
First, Carl helps Mary Jane to the bathroom. Then he helps her shower, gets her dressed, makes her breakfast and then spends the entire day with her, just the two of them.
A very important step, Carl said, is putting on Mary Jane’s jewelry: “Don’t forget the bracelet with the heart goes on the left with her watch. The other two bracelets go on the right,” Becky wrote in a Facebook post.
Carl says that routine is very important with people with dementia.
Becky says that throughout her parents’ marriage, Mary Jane has always been supportive of Carl and has been his “biggest cheerleader.”
Now if that's not devotion, we don't know what is.
