A group of hikers in South Lake Tahoe had an encounter with a mountain lion recently and we wanted to tell you how they scared the lion off in case you are ever in the same situation!
They were hiking the Velma Lakes Trail from Camper Flat to Middle Velma Lake when the lion began stalking them. The hikers said the lion circled them four times and was growling.
The hikers said they clapped their hiking poles together and blew their whistles. It took a while but the mountain lion finally left. Without doing either of those things, who knows what would have happened!
Park staff reminds people to be aware when they're hiking and know what to do if you encounter a mountain lion. Make yourself visibly bigger by waving your hands over your head or fanning out a jacket. You can throw anything you have in your hand, but not stoop down to pick up a rock or stick as this will make you appear smaller and more vulnerable.
You shouldn't run as this can trigger a puma's instinct to chase its prey; instead back away slowly. But if the animal attacks, fight back.
