We've all seen it. Fare evasion at a BART station. It happens ALL the time and now BART wants to do something about it.
Swapping 600 consoles for sturdier, taller versions would cost an estimated $150 million to $200 million, but BART says they know it's an on-going issue that they need to address!
Officials hope that by chipping away at fare evasion they can also fend off other problems, such as robberies, assaults, aggressive panhandling, open-air drug use and homeless people sleeping on the trains.
BART says they are going to hire a consulting firm to determine the feasibility of making the changes.
