It's always interesting to learn about a landmark that you just assume has existed without conflict was actually in danger of being demolished!
That's exactly the case with San Francisco's Ferry Building! Back in the 1940's when the Bay Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge were built, ferry traffic took a dive and the suggestion was made to demolish the Ferry Building and put up office buildings! Someone (we don't know who) said "that's a terrible idea" and the rest is history.
