A West Contra Costa County garbage hauler wants to start penalizing customers for putting non-recyclable items in their recycle carts.
Last fall apparently, this company (Republic Services) started auditing what is truly being put into the blue recycle bins and giving out fines for $26 to residents who were "contaminating" the bins.
It turns out, they weren't supposed to be issuing fines and they ended up giving people their money back.
But now the company says they are having major problems again with people putting non-recyclable items into the recycle bins and they want to start issuing those fines again. They are going through the proper channels this time and involving the cities that are affected and working directly with them on seeing if they can start imposing the fines.
More to come....
