Both Mel’s Drive-In locations have been San Francisco landmarks since they opened their first one in 1947. Back then the servers wore roller skates, took orders, and delivered the food while the customers stayed in their cars. That’s how it was done back then. Because of the pandemic, Mel’s is bringing back that little piece of Americana with carhop service. Servers, dressed in white, come out to your car, attach a tray to your car window, take your order, then deliver your food.
Colton and Chasen Weiss, Mel’s Grandsons, saw some old photos of the Mel’s locations on Geary and Lombard, and decided that bringing back that method of service provided pandemic-safe service, and a bit of nostalgia.
