The massive Saturday night fire on San Francisco’s Pier 45 on Fisherman’s Wharf might mean a delay for the dungeness crab season, and major property losses for area fishermen.
Millions of dollar’s worth of fishing gear was destroyed in the fire. Larry Collins, president of the San Francisco Community Fishing Association said the losses could total 4 or 5 million dollars…mostly crab pots. Collins says that 30 families lost everything.
Bob Maharry has been a San Francisco crab fisherman for 46 years. He said his expensive, hand made crab traps, stacked to the ceiling, are a total loss because of the four alarm fire. Maharry said “You wake up, and realize everything you did your whole life is gone.”Every piece of equipment he owned was destroyed.
The Port of San Francisco is helping fishermen to relocate, and a GoFundMe page has been set up to give them a helping hand in replacing their equipment.
