There’s a reason you might be seeing refrigerators popping up on lawns and street corners in downtown Oakland, West Oakland, and the Northgate area of Oakland. It’s a program called the Town Fridge network.
Signs on the fridges read “Take what you want, leave what don’t.” The purpose of the network is to provide fresh produce and other food products to Oakland residents who don’t have easy access to them. Anyone can contribute food. The only ground rule is, raw meat is not allowed.
Contributions to Town Fridge have been overwhelming. People can also volunteer to become fridge hosts and maintain refrigerators on their property. A similar program in San Francisco, SF Free Food Fridge is also receiving a huge response.
