Mary Danielâs husband, Steve resides at a nursing facility, and before the pandemic, Mary would visit Steve every night to help him get ready for bed. It was the best way she could stay connected with him. The shelter in place that COVID-19 brought on changed everything.
Thatâs when the state banned all visitations to nursing homes to protect the residents. Mary sent at least a hundred messages to the Governor asking for permission to visit Steve. The best Mary could do was window visits. Those just made Steve cry.
Mary came up with the idea of becoming a volunteer at the nursing facility, but volunteering was also limited. Then, out of the blue, the facilityâs corporate office offered her a job as a dishwasher. She took the job, and Mary and Steve were reunited early in July after nearly four months of separation. Mary said âHe was teary eyed. He touched my face, even with my mask on.â
