Berkeley students are finding themselves on the hook for an apartment lease they’ll probably never use.
One Berkeley senior, Edward Hwang, signed a lease for an apartment last November, and was supposed to move in August 1st. But this past spring Berkeley announced that the campus will be closed this year in favor of online classes, making housing near campus unnecessary, and costly. Hwang is trying to negotiate with the landlord, and will be takingonline classes at his parents’ home in Santa Clara.
In the meantime, students who signed up and paid for on-campus housing at Cal were given full refunds.
