5 additional officers help decrease suicides on Golden Gate Bridge

Golden Gate Bridge officials say the number of people that commit suicide by jumping off of the Golden Gate Bridge has decreased since they brought 5 additional officers on board. Those officers' responsibility is to solely look out for suicidal people.

Last year alone the bridge patrol team assisted 245 people who presented a risk of suicide. 33 people were successful in taking their own lives.

There are now 36 people that work security on the bridge in total.

The bridge district plans to install net made of stainless steel and marine-grade cable along the 1.7-mile bridge to prevent suicides. Officials say the net should be finished by January 2021.
