A 7-Eleven store in Modesto is blasting classical music over outside speakers to dissuade loitering and panhandling.
The owner of the store says customers feel safer since the loud music has driven away folks just hanging around the store entrance.
The classical music is a part of a non-confrontational effort to reduce loitering. It helps store managers and workers avoid confrontations.
Another method some 7-Eleven stores are using involves a high-pitched screech similar to a mosquito buzz that clerks can turn on and off when needed. This practice is not new. Some businesses and public places have been using this type of deterrent for years.
