After 45 Years, San Francisco's Beach Blanket Babylon Is Closing Its Doors

After 45 years, a San Francisco staple is closing its doors for good.

“Beach Blanket Babylon” debuted in 1974, making it the nation’s longest continuously running musical revue. Its final performance is set for New Year’s Eve.

It was originally scheduled to run for only six weeks, but word spread, and it quickly became a quintessential San Francisco experience.

Producer Jo Schuman Silver said the show is ending not for financial reasons but because she wanted it to go out on a high note and felt the time was right.

“Beach Blanket Babylon” has since been performed more than 17,000 times in front of 6.5 million people, including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, David Bowie and Robin Williams.

Jack and Carolyn talked about it on the air. Listen below...
