While many J.C. Penny and Sears stores are closed permanently their landlords perhaps have figured out what to do with the real estate.
Amazon wants to convert them in merchandise fulfillment centers. That’s where Amazon processes customer orders, and sends them out for delivery. In delivery lingo, this would close “the last mile” …making deliveries faster because the fulfillment center would be closer to people receiving the goods.
Penny’s is closing 154 stores, and Sears announced plans to shut down 96 stores. Amazon isn’t answering questions on the topic, yet.
