When the pandemic hit, toll collectors were temporarily pulled from Bay Area bridges.
That move has just been made permanent. Since the early days of the pandemic, drivers using the cash lanes of the toll plazas were instructed to just drive through. A camera took a picture of their license plate, and a bill was sent for the toll crossing. That is now permanent, and drivers can now use any lane whether or not they use Fastrak.
About 250 people work in toll collection department. All will keep their jobs, and be trained to take new responsibilities within the department.
