BART is considering constructing a second Transbay crossing…again.
BART wants to construct another tube under the bay between Oakland and San Francisco, despite the fact that pandemic ridership is waaaay down. BART is betting on ridership coming back up once people feel more comfortable riding public transit again.
The idea was first floated about 15 years ago when it made sense. It won’t make sense until more people are OK with riding the rails again.
Planning for the new tube is underway, and they figure it might be completed by 2040 at a cost of $29 billion.
