The pandemic is responsible for a skyrocketing number of abandoned boats in San Francisco Bay.
Boaters who may have lost their jobs this past year because of COVID-19, and are no longer able to maintain their vessels, are faced with two solutions: do their best to come up with the costs of maintenance, or completely abandon their boats, and set them free in San Francisco Bay.
Many boaters are choosing the second option, creating a big problem for the Coast Guard and environmental agencies. Abandoned boats release an alarming about of gasoline and oil into the bay.
