Owen Leipelt, 21, flew into Santa Rosa Airport to pick up his passengers, who happened to be three labrador retriever puppies on their way to Southern California.
He’ll deliver the pups to Canine Companions International for training to become service animals. Owen’s family has been hosting puppies for Canine Companions since before he was born. Owen already has 3,000 hours of flying time, but this was his first flight with his puppy cargo.
Canine Companions says volunteer pilots have filled in since commercial airlines have restricted flights for animals during COVID.
