Jose Villarruel, better known as Mr. V to his students, was a substitute teacher in a California school district. Because of COVID-19, his hours were cut way back, and he felt that his days of a teacher were over. He resigned so he could get a pension check. The check wasn’t enough to cover his expenses, so he started living in his car. One of Mr. V’s former students, Steven Nava, saw him reaching for things out of the trunk of the car he was sleeping in.
It was then that Steven knew he had to help. He gave Mr. V $300, then started a GoFundMe money raiser for his former substitute teacher. The goal was to raise $5,000. Now, the total is over $27,000.
