We’re so sorry to see this happen.
A Berkeley landmark has to shut down, temporarily, because of the increase in meat prices. For example, the price of brisket has doubled in the last six months, along with the price of other things required to run a deli. Augie’s Montreal Deli would rather close it’s doors rather than pass the outrageous increase on to its customers.
Owner Lex Gopnic-Lewinski said “I don't know, maybe it's the Canadian in me, but we really want to have value and feel like people are getting a fair deal for what they're paying, and we're already kind of a more expensive sandwich,... so we looked at what the pricing would have to be, and it would just be too expensive. It would turn off our customers. And we would just feel kind of crappy about it.”
Hopefully Augie’s will reopen sooner than later.
