The cable cars are working their way back in San Francisco!
Earlier this week the rolling San Francisco icon began test runs in The City. On Monday the cars were taken out of mothballs, where they’ve been for a year and a half, and allowed to roll again. The purpose of the tests was to make sure the cars were in good shape after all this time, and to train operators. MUNI allowed riders to hop on for free, much to the delight of tourists who were in town and didn’t expect the cars to be running.
Mayor Breed originally expected the tests to get underway in August. But MUNI progress in getting the cars up to speed was fast enough to get the tests started earlier.
The cable cars will begin full passenger service in September.
