San Francisco’s Kuinini (Nini) Manumua will be making Olympic history!
She was born in American Samoa. Eventually she and her family moved to Tonga. When she turned 10 she and her family moved to San Francisco. She grew up in the housing projects in Hunter’s Point, where it was too dangerous to even go outside.
She’s a natural athlete. At Lincoln High she played basketball, volleyball and ran track. It was at Lincoln she started weightlifting, and that’s where she really made her mark. Her weightlifting coach, Kevin Doherty, saw plenty of potential.
So now Nini is packing her bags and heading to Tokyo where she’ll compete as the FIRST female weightlifter to represent Tonga!
