Erik Falkenstrom is a training captain with the San Ramon Valley Fire Protection District. But his sense of duty doesn’t stop when he leaves the Bay Area.
When he took his family to Mexico in 2016, Erik dropped into some of the fire stations near where they were vacationing. He was surprised at the lack of protective equipment at some of the stations.
When he got back to the states he contacted Firefighters Crossing Borders, a non profit that provides used equipment to firefighters that might not have the equipment they need to do their job effectively.
Most firefighting gear is taken out of service after 10 years, but it’s still in good condition. Erik makes sure it goes to a fire department that can use it. He also travels to Mexico once a year, using his own money and vacation time, to conduct training sessions.
