The smoke from the Caldor fire southwest of Lake Tahoe has grown to unprecedented levels.
Burning since August 14th, the Calder fire has grown to more than 213 square miles, and has become the nation’s top priority for firefighting resources. New evacuation orders were issued for El Dorado and Alpine counties. Residents of Christmas Valley near South Lake Tahoe were told to be ready to go.
Smoke over the California-Nevada border has become almost unbearable. On Thursday the pollution level was reduced to “unhealthy” from 24 hours earlier when it was “hazardous”.
As of Thursday containment was at 12%.
