Mel Smothers was looking for something to occupy his time while he, his wife Liz and their dog Peak were stuck on Highway 50 evacuating from South Lake Tahoe. So, he pulled out his violin.
He got out of his truck and started playing for the other motorists who weren’t moving. Liz was worried that he’d draw a crowd and make traffic worse. But since no one was moving, it didn’t matter. The trip from South Lake Tahoe to Sacramento, usually a 2.5 drive, took 7.5 hours.
Smothers took up the violin about six years ago after taking a semester at Juilliard.
