Here’s some great news for crab lovers.
You’ll be able to buy Dungeness crab right off of the boats tied up at Fisherman’s Wharf, thanks to a vote by San Francisco’s Port Commission earlier this week.
It’s a one year pilot program that will be extended if it’s successful. As you would guess, the crabbers are happy. Wholesalers not so much, because buying off of the boat would cut out the wholesalers.
The Port Commission hopes that this will draw people to the merchants at the Fisherman’s Wharf area, which has lost about 40% of their business because of the pandemic.
But none of this matters until the commercial crab season starts. The season was supposed to start on November 15th, but has been delayed. The new start date will be announced on the 15th.
