It’s important to have the right people around you. According to Will Smith, it can make all the difference in the world.

During a chat with Questlove on his Questlove Supreme podcast, Will was asked about his transition from music to acting – most notably, leaving DJ Jazzy Jeff behind when Quincy Jones asked him to do “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” “I’ve never been the kind of person that felt like I had to stay with my friends to be loyal,” he said. “I felt like my loyalty was to their growth and expansion...It was always painful for me when somebody couldn’t keep up, but I would much rather keep going and send them some help than slow down and let them pull us all down.”

“Your friends are critical. It’s like one bad friend can blow your whole s—t in one night,” the newly minted Golden Globe winner went on to say. “Choosing your friends and closest associates is how you fertilize your dreams. You can’t have a life that’s better than your associations. It’s impossible. Your life is a team effort…so you can’t have a better life than your team.”
