If you are a driver in California and the Bay Area specifically, and you have any sort of unpaid bridge toll, you may get a big (financial) surprise when you go to renew your car registration at the DMV.

The Bay Area Toll Authority Oversight Committee is trying to recover $50 million in unpaid bridge tolls and $134 million in late-payment penalties from January 2021 through now.

396,135 drivers owe anywhere from $22 to $88 in toll fees and late penalties. More than 13,000 drivers owe at least $1,600!

Most drivers are expected to pay their bills in full in order to renew their registrations.

Authorities are saying that the unpaid bridge toll problem is likely caused by the elimination of in-person toll collection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
