The 10 mile two-lane stretch from Sears Point to Mare Island in Vallejo adds about 70 minutes to a typical commute.
Here’s some good news and some bad news. The good news is that, pending a completed environmental review, construction on two additional lanes in that area could begin by 2025, and be completed a year later.
The bad news: There may have to be a toll imposed in that stretch in order to help pay for the project. The toll could be anywhere from one to seven dollars. The cost could be anywhere from $6 billion to $8 billion.
The plan would be to also raise the freeway to avoid the freeway going under water. Scientists say that could happen by 2040.
