When Will The Commercial Crab Season Get Underway?

Commercial Dungeness crab season is delayed again.

This will be the fourth year in a row that the start of crab fishing season will need to be put off. The season traditionally starts on November 15.

The delay is out of concern over humpback whales becoming tangled in the crab trap lines. There’s still an abundance of whales still present in the waters between Mexico and the Mendocino county line.

There have been fifteen confirmed cases of whales becoming entangled in fishing gear. That includes three involving crab fishing gear.

Private crab fishing is permitted. The commercial season will hopefully get underway December 16th.
