Dungeness crab lovers will finally see their wish come true. The commercial crab fishing season will finally get underway on December 31st.
This is the fourth year in a row that the crabbing season has been delayed, as it was supposed to start on November 15th. If anyone wanted crab for Thanksgiving or Christmas, they had to catch the crustaceans themselves. Two factors contributed to the delay: poor meat quality, and an abundance of whales in the fishing waters, and the risk of the whales getting tangled in the trap lines.
More good news: Crab fishers can now legally sell crab directly from their boats, so the crab will be available faster.
