Dolly Parton began giving books to small children 35 years ago. Dolly’s Imagination Library gives away books in several U.S. states, the U.K., Ireland and Australia.
Here’s more good news. The Imagination Library is planning to expand its book giveaway to California in June. More than 2.4 million kids across the state will be eligible to receive free books.
The Imagination Library began in 1988 in the Tennessee county where Dolly grew up, sending each child a new book in the mail each month until they were five years old.
Dolly said that the Imagination Library was inspired by her dad, who couldn’t read or write. So far about $200 million in books have been given away.
