UCSF has just come out with new research about the pluses and minuses of drinking coffee. The findings were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

First the bad news. One of the downsides of drinking coffee daily is you will probably lose some sleep no matter WHEN you drink it. People lost an average of 36 minutes of sleep a night if they drank coffee during the day. Irregular heartbeats are a bit more common among coffee consumers than non-consumers. But EVERYONE experiences them now & then and are not usually a cause for concern.

Now the good stuff. Coffee consumption has a big effect on physical activity levels. We move more, adding 1000 extra steps. This may explain why coffee is sometimes linked to better health. Coffee drinkers live longer, have lower rates of diabetes, cancer, liver disease and depression.
