It may seem like the term "comfort food" has been around for ages... it was actually only added to everyday conversation about 50 years ago, in the early 1970s.
And we have Liza Minnelli to thank for it.
Yes. THAT Liza Minnelli - the daughter of the late Judy Garland.
Minnelli used the expression during an interview for The Victoria Advocate in April 1970 - saying that she loves "savory foods" and "comfort foods." She then explained that comfort foods is anything you sort of yum, yum, yum and takes a while to swallow."
So... thank you Liza!?!
