Do you have a hard time imagining what your parents were like before you were born? Just 55% of us know about our moms’ pre-parenthood lives and far fewer - only 23% - know about their dad’s, new research from Ancestry.com reveals.
It also finds that 90% of fathers want to share stories about their lives with their kids, and we want to find out more, too. According to the study, the top three things people want to know about their parents are stories about adventures and travel (40%), their first job (34%) and their biggest achievements (29%).
With Father’s Day this weekend, it may be the ideal time to learn more about your dear old dad. Christa Crowan, a genealogist at Ancestry, recommends these questions to get those conversations started with the father figure in your life. She suggests starting small, with lighthearted questions, then working your way up to deeper ones.
- What is the first concert you ever went to? What was your favorite band growing up?
- What was your first job?
- Where did you meet mom? Was it love at first sight?
- What family members do you feel closest to?
- What is your best adventure/travel story?
- What has been your biggest regret?
- What is the best life lesson that you’ve learned?
- What has been your happiest memory?
- Did you ever have a rebellious phase?
- Did you live a similar lifestyle before I came into the world?
- What is one thing about you that you’d like me to pass onto the next generation?
- What’s a core memory that you have from your pre-parenthood days?
- Are there any unexpected people/names in our family tree?
- What historical events did you witness?
