Americans love dogs, with research showing two-thirds of U.S. households have a dog. More than three-quarters (85%) also consider their pets to be a part of their family. But what are the most loved dog breeds in the U.S.? New research from “Forbes” digs in to find out.

They asked 10-thousand dog owners across the country about their favorite breeds and it turns out, a lot of Americans don’t have one.

The biggest percentage of respondents report that “no breed in particular” is their favorite (13%).

But the breed that ranks at the top is Australian shepherds, followed by German shepherds.

Australian shepherds are the favorite dog breed in 10 states: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Missouri, Montana, New York and Virginia. They’re also the second favorite breed in nine states.

Aussies may have won the popular vote, but German shepherds are the favorite in 16 states, more than any other breed.

The breed that comes in as the “least favorite” is the Havanese, which was the bottom choice in 33 states.
