Cursive writing is making a comeback in California schools, as a new law requires the teaching of cursive writing.

The law aims to address concerns that learning to use a keyboard had superseded handwriting skills that are important for intellectual development.

The ability to sign one's name in cursive is important for future job applications, writing checks, signing medical forms, obtaining driver's licenses, and voting.

While the research on cursive is debated, there is broad agreement that typing should not replace extensive instruction in handwriting for young students.
