Robin Williams and Billy Crystal's cameo on Friends was unplanned and improvised, adding to the spontaneity and humor of the scene.
Williams appeared as a character named Tomas in the season 3 episode, "The One With The Ultimate Fighting Champion," alongside Crystal.
The cameo happened because Williams and Crystal happened to be on a nearby set and the writers asked them if they'd be up for a quick cameo.
They agreed and ad-libbed their entire scene, inventing the story about Tomas and his wife. The cameo coincided with the release of their movie, Father's Day, providing extra publicity for both actors.
