The Dungeness crab season has begun in San Francisco, with fishermen selling their catch directly off the boat at Fisherman’s Wharf.

The California Department of Fish & Wildlife has given the green light for the season to commence, after delays to prevent entanglement of migrating whales.

Customers have been lining up at Piers 45 and 47 to purchase fresh whole crab, with a price of $10 per pound.

The Port of San Francisco has urged buyers to purchase directly from local fishers and bring durable containers.

Assembly Bill 1797 has also been introduced to designate the Dungeness crab as the official state crustacean of California.
