St. Mary's College Gaels were selected for March Madness after winning the WCC regular season and tournament titles, with only one loss since the start of the year.
Meanwhile, the Stanford women's basketball team, despite a 28-5 record, was surprised to receive a number 2 seed in the fourth region after losing in the Pac-12 tournament championship game to USC.
The scene in Moraga was festive as the Gaels celebrated their selection, while the Stanford team was visibly shocked by the seeding.
