The Story of why Huey Lewis filled in for Prince in ‘We are the World’

“We are the world” was a song written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, produced by Quincy Jones released by the super group USA for Africa. The 1985 song was produced to help raise money for famine relief in Africa. The Super Group consisted of Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner Willie Nelson and many of the greatest Superstars of the 80’s. According to Quincy Jones Prince was invited to be part of the song but a few things got in the way.

First it was around the height of Princes career and he thought he was above that. 2nd He did NOT like the song. But perhaps the biggest reason Prince rejected “We Are the World” was that he simply didn’t like the track. “He felt like the song for ‘We Are the World’ was horrible,” Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin. However a part was reserved for Prince in case he changed his mind he never showed up so they gave that part to Huey Lewis.
